Jersey Boys Manila

I have always loved musical plays. The combination of singing and acting excites the hidden performer in me. Growing up, theater acting, directing, or simply singing on stage became a passion and a confidence booster (mostly for school). But those are nothing compared to the world class and professional performances I have watched on stage. I am quite familiar in the production side as part of my job but I am such a good audience too. I admire everyone within a performance, from the vision of producers, the director, the actors, musicians, lighting directors, production designers, etc. Watching brings me to a special world, even just for 2-3 hours.

Last night, my family and I got the chance to watch the Jersey Boys at the Meralco Theater It is one of the longest running shows in Broadway that has finally come to Manila since September 23 of this year, produced by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group. I honestly consider myself not their target market (millennials can surely relate) but I am pretty sure my Dad and the rest of the group will enjoy good music. Thank you, APT/Ten Bridges! 🙂

True enough. The whole stage design combined with superb lighting transported me to an era of music and learned about the journey of men from rugs to hall of fame. The songs rendered live by the instrumentalists/musicians made me love music all the more. Music gives life to any soul. The story is about the rise of the singing group called Four Seasons. The lead actors: Nyoy Volante, Christian Bautista, Markki Stroem, and Niño Alejandro did a blast! Their voices, whether solo or all together, are too soothing to the ears even if I am not familiar with most of the songs. Among others, I really admire Nyoy, having the lead role of Franki Valli, for giving such an outstanding performance. He is singing and speaking not in his usual tone, thus the consistent effort. But still sounding good… very good. He never fails to amaze me with his flexible musical talent (having watched Your Face sound Familiar, Shrek the Musical, and his other performances). Christian’s character as Bob Gaudio is my favorite. Bob’s strength in composing beautiful songs is truly the key for the group’s success. I have watched Christian perform many times, and he still sounds good as ever. Markki Stroem as Tommy DeVito is the villain of the group. Tommy’s arrogance has been crossed to us viewers, the fall of the quartet. Markki is a surprise to me. I didn’t know he can sing really good and effectively portray such a role. Niño Alejandro’s character as Nick Massi and his continuous give-up moments provided most of my laughs. I am lucky to still know (in my own world and taste of music) some of their hits such as Sherry”,  “Oh What A Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” You just sing it when you know it, right?
